Governments and their relationship with sports - Sports - Jamaica Gleaner - Sunday | February 19, 2012

Impeccable, impartial piece Mr Becca! I've felt increasingly uncomfortable with the "world government" attitude of international sporting bodies. They sometimes preclude sportsmen from seeking redress in national courts. They punish governments that "interfere" in national sporting associations but they all expect these groups to be funded at least partially by governments. They are often unfair & unjust in their actions & decisions. Transparency disappears in their "backroom" dealings. Even worse, there is no effective oversight for these international bodies & their record in self policing is a disgrace! FIFA, WICB, ICC, IOC, IAAF....etc they all seem to be the same. If it were not for the governments, prosecutors & police in India, Europe & the USA, nothing serious would have been done about even the common corruption allegations in cricket, athletics & football. We need better tools to manage these organisations & the sooner the better.
