EDITORIAL - JTA silly amid dismal educational outcomes - Commentary - Jamaica Gleaner - Monday | February 27, 2012

The Jamaica Teachers Association wants the Ministry Of Education to find a way to take teachers out of the classroom during school time in order to attend training sessions. That way, they would get to use school holidays intended for the students, for whatever they like. Quite apart from the damage that would do to teaching time in the classrooms there is another side. It's true that big private sector companies require employees to attend training & do it mostly during the work week. Many companies also require employees, in the interest of their own proffessional development, to attend training on days off, without additional pay. The JTA seems determined to secure for its members, treatment only available to employees of top private sector firms but at tax payers' expense. Clearly they must think we are as well off as those big companies! It seems they want to cherry pick from private sector practise, what will put more money in their pockets & more time on their hands but leave the work ethic & pay by performance behind.
