Usain Bolt to race Asafa Powell on May 31 - Sports - Latest News - Jamaica Gleaner

Looks like Asafa Powell wants to test his preparedness for the Olympic Games, not to mention to earn some always welcome cash. Nice publicity too, in order to raise expectations for the athletics clash on the track at the Olympics later this year.

Jamaican dollar to lose value - Analysts - News - Latest News - Jamaica Gleaner

The Peoples National Party & the Jamaican media, last year ignored the reasons for the increase in unemployment & poverty between 2007 & 2011. However, they have been at pains at every opportunity to explain that crime fell under the Jamaica Labour Party only because of what happened at Tivoli. Tivoli, they claim, only happened becuase of pressure from them. Now , here we are under the PNP with murders rising & interest rates rising. The US dollar is rising compared to the Jamaican dollar & according to this report, it's expected to reach JMD$89 to US$1 by the time we officially reach 50. Is the Jamaican media going to blame the PNP for these things without excuses? I won't hold my breath. I wouldn't reccommend that you do so either

Government gives support to local nutraceutical sector

The lip-service, hypocrisy & red tape over the years have almost stifled this and other ventures. We could have been much further along the development road if it weren't for pompous bureaucrats with no imagination! Many great efforts have been stifled instead of facilitated by these people& their rules. It is their limited vision of how our economy should look that has held us back.Sugar, banana, bauxite, smallscale manufacturing & if those become uncompetitive, we shouldn't nimbly shift to non traditional areas like this & niche markets. In other words, if the traditional holders of money aren't interested in a project, no one else is to be facilitated. I'm including the financial institutions in this massive ossified road block that has trapped us where we are while other countries have leaped ahead. I pray that the desperate times will break the stranglehold & set free our creative & industrial potential so we can really make our mark using this & many other non-traditional routes.

EDITORIAL - JTA silly amid dismal educational outcomes - Commentary - Jamaica Gleaner - Monday | February 27, 2012

The Jamaica Teachers Association wants the Ministry Of Education to find a way to take teachers out of the classroom during school time in order to attend training sessions. That way, they would get to use school holidays intended for the students, for whatever they like. Quite apart from the damage that would do to teaching time in the classrooms there is another side. It's true that big private sector companies require employees to attend training & do it mostly during the work week. Many companies also require employees, in the interest of their own proffessional development, to attend training on days off, without additional pay. The JTA seems determined to secure for its members, treatment only available to employees of top private sector firms but at tax payers' expense. Clearly they must think we are as well off as those big companies! It seems they want to cherry pick from private sector practise, what will put more money in their pockets & more time on their hands but leave the work ethic & pay by performance behind.

A last-gasp reprieve for JCA?

I like this except for saying the JCA has belatedly found its voice. That sounds a little naive. It is true but we all know the reason, don't we? The JCA executive was recently changed. The previous JCA executive supported the WICB's position on Chris Gayle & everything else. They were in control for years, including when Gayle got sidelined. The former president supported the WICB boss Julian Hunt blindly. Even the government at the time couldn't have said much because the JCA at the time would not have supported them. That would've been embarrassing! I see the allegations against the former boss of the JCA instructive of the attitude of that whole cabal. I mean....attacking a member of the executive in his office because you think he's likely to not support you in an election? Jumping on the man's desk and all that? Either the WICB shapes up or we should leave! Enough is enough! That's what I say! What do you say?

Damn right PM! The time for being diplomatic with the WICB passed when they diplomatically ignored the very thorough report & recommendation presented by PJ Patterson some years ago! Gayle has never been given an opportunity in a hearing, to defend himself. Why then has he been in effect, suspended for so long. Is the board waiting for for his cricketing career to come to an end? NEPA seeking beach compliance - Lead Stories - Jamaica Gleaner - Friday | February 24, 2012

So AFTER, the boys died, the regulator has started running around seeking to do what they should have been doing all along. This is talk, talk & nothing but talk. A lawsuit against the regulators among others, seeking heavy damages seems to be in order. That appears to be a more effective way of making them do their jobs than just trusting them. "Ainsley Henry, director of the Application and Management Division at NEPA, told The Gleaner that the licence to operate the Shan Shy beach was last renewed in 2001." Is it the norm for the regulator to put us at risk by allowing beach operators to be in breach like this for 10 years? If so, then in what other areas are they similarly lax?

Farmer Greg's brother, friend acquitted of murder

Why does it seem as if we are unable to present convincing cases to juries when horrible things like this happen? Are we to believe that these men are innocent? It appears to me that we just failed to put together a solid case. Why would we say 2 guns were used if our own expert says as many as 5 guns were used? It just makes no sense. Was there no possibility of turning one defendant against the other? Are we still stuck in the past where we don't do deals in murder cases? Our prosecutors must do much, much better. This is utterly unacceptable!

Lab-grown hamburger due to be served up this year ... for $330,000

I don't think I'd want to eat this. This stuff reminds me of GM foods. What's the longterm risk to our health, our DNA & our evolution? Everything on this planet is connected. If we separate ourselves from the food chain, what will happen to us? Also, this could lead to too much power over our food supply being put into corporate, patented hands. There's too much adding & subtracting going on in the food sector already. I think I'll just go organic from now on to be safe!

Governments and their relationship with sports - Sports - Jamaica Gleaner - Sunday | February 19, 2012

Impeccable, impartial piece Mr Becca! I've felt increasingly uncomfortable with the "world government" attitude of international sporting bodies. They sometimes preclude sportsmen from seeking redress in national courts. They punish governments that "interfere" in national sporting associations but they all expect these groups to be funded at least partially by governments. They are often unfair & unjust in their actions & decisions. Transparency disappears in their "backroom" dealings. Even worse, there is no effective oversight for these international bodies & their record in self policing is a disgrace! FIFA, WICB, ICC, IOC, IAAF....etc they all seem to be the same. If it were not for the governments, prosecutors & police in India, Europe & the USA, nothing serious would have been done about even the common corruption allegations in cricket, athletics & football. We need better tools to manage these organisations & the sooner the better.

Are market forces more powerful than regulators? - Business - Jamaica Gleaner - Sunday | February 19, 2012

Businesses will look for ways around rules to make an extra dollar. We must shop around. We must also push politicians to foster more competition to prevent the players in our small market from acting like a cartel. These seem to be the solutions to these problems. What do you think?

More visitors, but worry over APD remains

In our case , here in Jamaica, the new minister has been going around the country glad-handing & scheming to bring all the old operatives back to the tourist board. Considering the tough times around the world, shouldn't he be doing what the former minister did? Shouldn't he be travelling the world, pushing hard for people to choose Jamaica in this rough winter for their vacations?

'Don't prescribe the medicine in one dose'

I agree with the idea except that we shouldn't give these guys any wiggle room to postpone or draw out these reforms. It's tough but overdue.

then the recovery in our agriculture will stall. It will in fact start declining again.

It's critical that we proceed on the basis of facts.
Senator Tufton must be commended for putting them out there.
I wouldn't want anybody to start claiming that nothing was done over the last 4 years without being contradicted.
Jamaica will be an efficient player in the sugar industry & benefit from more value added products from that industry because of the previous gov't.
Other reforms have been queued up & must be completed. Bowing to those who benefit from the status quo in this sector is not an option.

The Caribbean: Not so gay

My prayer, is that we be allowed to evolve just as the Europeans, North Americans, New Zealanders & Australians have.
Our views on open homosexuality are our cultural preferences. They aren't holding us back. Deal with HIV/AIDS,
punish violent acts against homosexuals but our views must be allowed to change as our societies change.
Nobody forced these changes on our more economically developed neighbours so they must not force them on us.
